Roof terrace
Epsom: contemporary roof deck

A south-facing roof terrace over an extension to a listed building. Nothing can be attached to the old structure, so the whole deck is built on a pedestal system with aluminium rails to keep the weight down. We were restricted as to where the weight could go on this roof. The planters are lightweight and placed to maximise the view from the adjoining bedroom.

Using porcelain and composite breaks up quite a large area and adds interest.
The deck boards are a mid-tone, bespoke finish with no woodgrain effect. They are lovely and soft to walk on in bare feet. Not too hot or cold.

Before

The shed is made from recycled hardwood. A sedum roof was installed to maximise the planting area and biodiversity.
