There are several zones to enjoy: a huge, secluded fire pit area with bespoke bench seating, a path of pebbles and slabs, a unique translucent fence, a lawn and lots of grassy planting to shield the house from across the river. The translucent fence is a one-off. It allows light into the garden where it would otherwise be dark. Shadows entertain as people walk along the path beyond.

Eel Pie Island poses several practical and design challenges:  accessible only on foot, everything must be transferred manually across the steep footbridge and the riverside is also tidal.
