A living wall was installed on the north-facing side and planted with shade-loving plants. It's shown in its first summer. Rills were created to add more greenery without taking up much of the floor space. Planted with Solieirollia solierolii (baby's tears) that can be stepped on, the soil will soon disappear. The rills are edged with dimmable LED light strips controlled from inside the house.
The timber panels are recycled hardwood. The bench is made from reused setts in gabions and an old hardwood door.

Shady seclusion
Epsom: a calm, peaceful retreat

A small courtyard bordered by large sliding doors from the kitchen area, which allow a full view of the courtyard. The existing granite setts were remodeled and pointed. Part of the paving is now large-format porcelain tiles, which are cool and smooth to walk on in bare feet.

Before

Some recycled roof slates make a nice feature and serve to hold water, letting it seep out into the soil. Half the garden is watered effectively by the wall irrigation.

Trachelospermum jasminoides is winding its way up the railings and a lovely Clematis armandii climbs the drainpipe opposite the living wall, to balance the height.
