Shady seclusion

Epsom KT17 | granite setts | dimmable LED lights | shady living wall | large format porcelain

Large sliding doors open onto this small courtyard. Existing granite setts were repointed and combined with large-format porcelain tiles. A north-facing living wall was installed with shade-loving plants. Narrow beds planted with spreading Soleirolia were edged with dimmable LED light strips.

The timber is recycled hardwood. The bench is made from spare setts in gabions and an old door. Some recycled roof slates make attractive features that hold water, letting it seep into the soil. The wall irrigation waters most of the garden effectively.

Trachelospermum jasminoides is starting to cover the utilitarian railings and a lovely Clematis armandii climbs the drainpipe opposite the living wall to balance the height.
