Inside outside

Surbiton: west-facing without a right angle in sight.

A long garden at an odd angle to the house, successfully designed to disguise the unusual shape, so that the garden appears much wider and straighter.

With the sun beating down on all but a sliver from 11am, we created raised beds in the light shade. The rendered beds support part of the top deck.

The old fence was clad with painted battens, making a smart backdrop for the low maintenance plants. The stripes and colour scheme reflect elements from inside the house, making a cohesive environment both inside and out.

A lower deck provides a shady spot. A rill, set into the top deck planted with sun-loving succulents is a lovely detail, which will largely mind its own business.

The top deck was raised to be level with the house, for a seamless transition from the kitchen. Long planks without joins, line up with the kitchen floor. A small detail that makes a big difference.

The existing red Camellia was a bit of a lump but we cut it back to reveal its lovely structure, something for nothing.
